The Aurora project began as a personal side project, with the aim of designing the best possible bass loading module to be used alongside a new horn design. The hybrid open baffle/aperiodic bass loading not only met but exceeded expectations, propelling us to dedicate our company’s design and manufacturing resources towards this project as our new flagship speaker offering.
Our efforts resulted in a range of breakthroughs, including a diffraction-less midrange horn and a new horn/dipole ribbon tweeter design, both of which add to the overall superiority of the Aurora. We also incorporated crossover technology borrowed from our top-of-the-line Contendo speaker, further enhancing the sound quality of the Aurora.

The Swirl Horn
The “Swirl” Midrange Horn is a prime example of our commitment to excellence in horn design. One of the major challenges we face in designing horns is the issue of diffraction, which can result in what is commonly known as “horn sound”. A true horn that is expertly designed and implemented should not have its own identifiable sound.
To address this, we developed a round tractrix horn with a specially-designed 360 degree diffraction-less flare for our Symphonia and Contendo speakers. By using a bullet shaped enclosure, we were able to completely eliminate coloration caused by diffraction and avoid smearing of transient information. The result is a midrange horn that delivers pure and unadulterated sound, free from any unwanted distortions or colorations.
The Ribbon Tweeter
Our Ribbon Tweeter is another breakthrough in audio technology that sets us apart from the competition. We have developed a number of horn-loaded true ribbon tweeters, both prototype and production models, including the (probably) first dipole horn loaded tweeter. We were inspired by the sound of true ribbons, particularly Raal’s designs, but recognized that direct radiating ribbons often lack the punch and dynamics of high-frequency compression drivers, while no compression driver can deliver the detail, accuracy, and bandwidth of a true ribbon transducer.
Our research led us to combine the two approaches to create a tweeter that delivers the best of both worlds, resulting in a sound that is unmatched in quality and clarity. The Aurora’s Ribbon Tweeter is the product of this tireless pursuit of excellence, offering an audio experience that is both dynamic and detailed.
Bass Loading
The Bass Loading Innovation began as an exercise to develop a non-horn bass module for a new speaker. We ruled out closed box and bass reflex technologies early on, as conventional open baffle topology did not align with our vision.
Our solution involved taking a large open baffle with four drivers and folding it back on itself, forming a cube/sphere hybrid. This approach offered several unique characteristics.
Firstly, the room loading became much more even, as the four drivers occupied four different points in space across two axes instead of being positioned on a plane as per conventional wisdom. As no driver was equidistant to another from proximate boundaries, the proximity modes were balanced out, resulting in much more even and efficient room loading. This represented a significant breakthrough.
Secondly, the four drivers effectively formed a virtual driver, with the center of the drivers at the center of the cube. This opened up interesting time-alignment possibilities which we explored in greater detail.

True Time Alignment
Achieve true time alignment with the Aurora speaker across all three axes using two methods.
First, the four bass drivers positioned on the sides of the cube create a “virtual” driver, with the center of this driver aligning with the center of the cube. This innovative approach allows the midrange and bass modules to function as a single point source.
While co-axial drivers, such as a tweeter mounted at the center of a woofer, can emulate a single point source, they cannot be time aligned because two drivers cannot occupy the same space. With the Aurora’s virtual bass driver and the offset midrange compression driver located at the center of the cube, both time alignment and co-axial performance are achieved simultaneously.
However, achieving time alignment involves more than just physically aligning the voice coils of the drivers. We took other factors into account and developed a custom measurement rig with proprietary measurement routines to ensure accurate time alignment. By constantly adjusting the driver positions and measuring in real time, we were able to achieve optimal time alignment.
For this reason, the ribbon tweeter is positioned at the rear of the cube, as this location is the true time-aligned position relative to the midrange driver. The tweeter’s placement was carefully measured and incorporated into the design process from the early stages.
