Founded in November 1997 in San Marcos, California by John McDonald and the late Roger Sheker, Audience began with a singular mission: to build the finest possible audio and video equipment. JOHN McDONALD — President, Audience
John McDonald, president of Audience, has spent decades pursuing a single goal: bringing listeners closer to the true sound of music. A lifelong music enthusiast and entrepreneur, McDonald helped shape Audience into one of the most respected names in high-performance audio.
His journey began in the 1970s when a chance meeting with audio designer Richard Smith sparked a shared vision of creating products capable of reproducing music with exceptional realism. That passion eventually led to the founding of Audience in 1997 together with design engineer Roger Sheker.
Under McDonald’s leadership, Audience expanded beyond loudspeakers into acclaimed cables and power conditioning systems, all designed to preserve musical purity. Today, the company continues to hand-build its products in California, guided by McDonald’s enduring dedication to innovation, craftsmanship, and authentic sound reproduction.
